News Update from Maddie

It has been an exciting 2022 outdoor season with many highlights to look back on!

In April this year I was internationally classified as a T38 para-athlete, which means I will have the opportunity to compete on the international stage for at least the next 2 years.  As an athlete with cerebral palsy, this classification means that I will compete against athletes with similar impairments.

In May, I had the honour of making my international debut for the Great Britain and Northern Ireland Athletics Team as part of a junior para squad at the World Para Grand Prix in Jesolo, Italy (see PARA JUNIORS EXCEL ON GB & NI DEBUTS | British Athletics).  I competed in the 100m and long jump events setting PBs in both events and coming first in the sprint (13.74) and second in the jump (4m 60cm) – beaten only by a new world record! A further PB in the long jump in June this year (4m 73cm) means that I am currently third in the world for my classification of athletes.

Another highlight in May 2022 was setting further PB in the 100m of 13.29 seconds (half a second off my previous one!) at the Loughborough International and taking first place.  In July I took gold at the English Seniors and Disability Championships in the 100m Ambulant and in the Long Jump, winning a training grant of £500.

This summer also saw the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham and I was chosen to carry the Queen’s Baton Relay leading up to the Games.

Looking into Autumn, I have been invited to compete in the 100m and long jump at the Sainsbury’s School Games Finals in September. The Finals are a brilliant multi-sport event that will take place at Loughborough University.  I had a fantastic experience last year, taking gold in the 100m competition so I’m hoping I can replicate that performance and  I look forward to meeting athletes from a range of sports from all over the country.

I have been working hard with my coach Dom at Halesowen Athletics and Cycling Club, training 4-5 days a week throughout this season.  I feel like I am getting stronger and more confident in sprints and jumps.  Thanks to your continued support I have been able to be fully equipped for training and accept invitations to travel to and take part in competitions. Next year I am determined to continue to improve my PBs, work hard and, hopefully, represent Team GB again on the international stage!
