Derek Southall - Founder and CEO
Our Founder and CEO Derek Southall, is a high profile and very well connected figure in the legal technology, innovation and digital marketplaces and was recently described as the “Doyen of legal IT and Innovation”.
Derek has spent nearly 25 years in a range of leading strategic roles for a top 50 global law firm, for most of this time as a Partner and Head of Strategic Development. Derek started his professional life as a corporate lawyer but since 1999 he has immersed himself in the world of Technology and Productivity, Digital, Innovation, Strategy and Knowledge Management as well as organisational and market change. During this time Derek has delivered a range of strategic projects both for the firm and its global clients (the latter ranging from some of the biggest legal teams in the world to the very smallest). Derek has literally supported hundreds of in house legal teams in a wide range of sectors.
Derek has spent over 17 years working both within the business and with major global clients in developing strategies and implementing a range of business improvement projects relating to technology, digital, compliance, risk, and productivity. The firm has grown from £27mil when Derek joined to over £400mil at today’s date. Derek has played a key role in supporting this growth through the dotcom era, multiple recessions, internationalisation, head quarter moves and several waves of technological changes.
Derek has led the firm’s innovation strategy and in 2016 the firm was named by the FT as the second most innovative law firm in Europe. Derek has also been the driving force behind winning a range of other awards.
The Financial Times ranked Derek as one of the top three most innovative lawyers in the UK in their first study into the UK market and he was recognised in 2017's prestigious Acritas Stars database as a one of few Star Lawyers delivering outstanding service. This was based entirely on independent client feedback. The IT team which Derek has been responsible for has also been named as the Most Innovative Legal Technology Team by the FT and Legal Business as Legal Technology Team of the Year.
Derek has been relationship partner for a long list of major household name clients in a range of sectors including Automotive, FMCG, Financial Services, Food and Drink, Fashion and Construction.
Derek chairs and was one of the founders of the Legal IT Innovators Group which plays a key role in driving ahead technological thinking and change for the good of the legal profession. In this role he has worked alongside the United Nations and a range of other large organisations.
Suzanne Southall - Director of Operations
Suzanne Southall is a Director of Hyperscale Group. She has considerable experience in the legal sector, having qualified as a solicitor in 1992, working in Employment Law. She worked for the Cayman Islands Government in the Attorney-General’s Chambers where she had various roles, including teaching at the Cayman Islands Law School, advising on aspects of law reform and drafting legislation.
Latterly Suzanne has worked as a Senior Lecturer at the College of Law, teaching law and skills to a wide range of students. Suzanne’s current role involves running Hyperscale Group’s operations including finance, HR and resource planning.
Adrienne Mansfield - Associate
With experience spanning both public and private sectors, Adrienne Mansfield is a highly qualified business change and transformation consultant.
Adrienne has spent over a decade in the legal sector gaining extensive knowledge and experience in the delivery of cultural change and business change programmes. Qualified to portfolio management level she has in depth knowledge of governance and delivery methods for all areas of programme and portfolio management.
Starting out in local government and moving onto the Ministry of Defence, then into Telecoms, Adrienne’s programme management experience spans everything from the installation of fibre infrastructure on UK wide Army, Navy and Air Force sites, to ensuring the delivery and availability of 5x 9’s (99.999) of business critical network capacity for the biggest Internet Service Providers.
Andrew Wingfield - Associate
Andrew has spent over 26 years as a solicitor in private practice and in-house roles, and more than half of that time in leadership roles. He is a seasoned legal manager with proven experience in a variety of fields including derivatives and structured products, corporate finance, M&A, and private equity.
As well as managing teams of lawyers, Andrew has considerable experience heading strategic change management projects. He has focused heavily on process improvement, innovation, automation, technology and digitisation in both legal and banking environments including the development of both captive offshore insourcing and third-party outsourcing solutions.
With his experience in strategic projects and having addressed the many human and practical change needs in regulated financial markets following the financial crisis, Andrew understands fully the many challenges which legal managers may face in today’s world. His interests lie in helping legal teams to improve their effectiveness and to implement solutions to these challenges while raising their impact on the clients they support.

Louise Heffernan – Office Manager
Louise Heffernan, whilst undertaking her Master’s degree in International Development at the University of Birmingham, is responsible for organising all of the administrative and event based activities to ensure the smooth running operations of Hyperscale Group. Louise organises our people, information, events and resources whilst interacting with clients and managing all website content. In addition, Louise provides project support where necessary and is training to become a Project Manager from October 2018.
Karen Brittan - Project Officer
Karen is an experienced project support professional possessing a wide set of skills within the project administration and coordination field.
With considerable experience across both public and private sectors, Karen has supported project teams with marketing projects, public relations work, social media and website content management, finance administration, event planning and client communication.
Responsibilities have included project planning and implementation, monitoring schedules and budgets, and liaising with key stakeholders.
